Automatic or manual - which is right for me?

Looking for your next used car and wondering whether to go for manual or automatic? Here is our guide to help you choose which one is going to be right for you. Read on to find out more.

Now, there is a fundamental difference between driving an automatic and a manual, and that is the number of pedals. An automatic car has two pedals, an accelerator and a brake, basically to go and to stop. However, with a manual car, we have a third pedal to contend with, the clutch. You also have the addition of gears, so essentially, there is a lot more work to do!

Having said that, the choice of manual cars is a lot broader, and they can be cheaper to buy too as a result of this. Another thing to note is that if you learn in a manual, you can drive either, but if you learn in an automatic, you would not be able to drive a manual car.

So, what are the pros and the cons?

Automatic

They are a lot easier to learn in and you also have less to think about when you are behind the wheel. They are more comfortable to drive and make for a more enjoyable experience. They are also great for drivers who have a disability or limited mobility for some reason. However, they are not as widely available as manual cars and, as we mentioned, you cannot drive a manual if you passed your test in an automatic, so it can be a little limiting.

Manual

Many say it is a more rewarding experience, driving a manual car. They are fun to drive and you have total control over the gears and behind the wheel. There are more cars available which can mean you get a better deal, and you also have the freedom to switch between the two. However, they can be more complicated to drive and it can sometimes feel overwhelming with the number of things to think about, also you have stalling to contend with!
